Why when death is certain for all of us do we avoid talking about it? Talking about death helps us to deal with our fears and better prepares us to make choices that influence the way we may spend our last weeks or months: where we live, who cares for us, what kind of pain relief we receive and so on. We can only take the initiative on these matters if we talk about them first – with our families, our friends, our communities. The National Interest Program on ABC Radio National and Palliative Care Victoria teamed up to present this panel discussion to mark National Palliative Care Week in 2010. Panel members include: Kim, a patient, Gary her partner and carer, Dr Bruce Rumbold, Director of the Palliative Care Unit at La Trobe University, and Molly Carlile, palliative care nurse, manager, educator and public speaker. Our thanks to Peter Mares, presenter of the "National Interest" program on ABC Radio National for moderating and James Panichi for producing this broadcast and to all the panel members. Part A.
